Miele S514 Solaris Bagged Canister Vacuum Review Even with the cons, still a great buy! I just got the solaris a week ago and I'm pretty impressed with it so far. I have had a chance to use some top of the line vacuums before t...

The lightness of this model is deceptive. This little vacuum has big power. We had been using an inexpensive (read: cheap) upright that we purchased at CostCo years ago. With two cats and living on a horse farm, the floors really needed a more substantial vacuum and I unwillingly admitted that a serious machine was required. The main features we needed was the ability to remove from a upholstered furniture, suck up dirt of various kinds (mud, errant gravel from the driveway, hay, stall shavings, parrot dander, etc) and be light enough for me to tug around.

This product, though expensive, answers our needs. It follows you like a lightweight bumper car but works so incredibly you won’t believe it. Who knew there was dirt to suck up IN-BETWEEN the wood floor slats?? I was never one for house cleaning and use a professional service every other week, but with two cats and five parrots living in the house it became impossible to ignore the need to vacuum in-between. The ability to remove the with the special attachment was fantastic! Our “rag rug” in the breakfast area - which attracts every crumb and bit of from the cat’s paws - gets clean in one pass of the regular floor brush.

Some neat features : Easy to change the attachments; easy to remove the long wand and use the short part; good variety of attachments; lots of choices for suction (read the manual if necessary to understand these); good suction on wood floors and area rugs equally; very, very light; telescopic wand allows different height people to change it for comfort.

We were lucky in that we have a vacuum store right in town and the salesperson helped us to decide between different models. This one, though expensive, had features we needed but going upwards in price wouldn’t make enough of a difference. Having the machine explained by a person (i.e. I’m not a manual-reader…) was helpful as I could use it that day with ease. Vacuums should not be rocket science but there are a lot of features my mom’s vacuum never had, so it’s worth knowing what you’re buying. We were able to express our requirements and have the right model suggested to us.

Since a vacuum is a once-in-decades purchase, we went for the money. I don’t mind since this will be my last vacuum cleaner purchase in this lifetime. I don’t use it more than once a week, so the bag has lasted for a couple of months already.

All-in-all, a great investment if you want vacuuming to be easy and quick.

Update: (Six months now) The vacuum continues to work well. When it feels like the suction isn’t so good, change the bag. An empty bag immediately increased the suction. It

is the easiest way to tell you have to change the bag.

I still ike the vacuum but have two minor complaints. The ergonomic handle is not comfortable at all. This might be due to the fact that I”m only 5′2″ but the little loop in the wand makes it more uncomfortable to us. The side “hook” for the want when you want to store it is not easy to use, though it does make it easier to put in a closet. It takes at least 4 tries to get it hooked on properly.

The pros are still that it cleans up very quickly - everything! still takes only a couple of minutes to remove from a cotton, black couch.
