When our Bissell 1698 carpet steam cleaner died after 6 years of great service, I checked Consumer Reports and Epinions for our next carpet steam cleaner. It seemed to me that Bissell had been on the decline, and Hoover on the rise, in the area of carpet steam cleaners. Seems I was very much mistaken as this Hoover does not begin to measure up to our old Bissell.

Clearly from the dirty water tank, when we use it some dirt is being cleaned from the carpet. However, it is quite ineffective in cleaning up anything other than small spot stains. We have two young children, and kids spill. That’s life as a parent, and this Hoover doesn’t even come close to doing as good a job as our old Bissell.

The lid of the clean water tank has a measuring cup with both 3 and 5 oz. markings. Hoover cleaning fluid is available in two concentrations–3 oz. and 5 oz. per gallon of hot water–so it’s very easy to use the correct concentration.

There’s no internal heating unit so hot water needs to be used, and that I believe is a good thing. When our old Bissell died, I disassembled it in an effort to find the broken part. From what I could tell, carpet steam cleaner heating units have a tendency to clog up over time from residual fluid left in the heating unit. I took it to a small appliance repair shop, and the price of repairing it was $100. With new ones available for $150, it was time to let the Bissell go.

We’re quite happy with our Hoover U5767-900 WindTunnel Upright Vacuum, but I should have stayed with Bissell and not gone to Hoover for a carpet steam cleaner.
