When you can play let’s match the shoe soles to the dirt impressions in the rug, you know it’s time to take some militant action. Mere vacuuming is just not enough.

I used to go to the supermarket and rent those big heavy cleaners. Not only did I have to take the time to provide enough identification to warrant a security clearance at the Pentagon, but then I had to drag the thing home. Did you ever notice how dirty they are to begin with? I kept thinking about what the machine probably sucked out of the people’s rug who rented it before me. Fleas, barf, you name it… yuck.

One day I was cruising the local Wal-Mart (a favorite past-time) when I spotted this Hoover SteamVac Deluxe on sale. I was having a great experience with my Hoover WindTunnel, so I decided to give it a shot. I did not comparison shop. It was an impulse purchase when I was in a cleaning binge type of mood.

The premise behind the "steam cleaners" is sound. You inject and agitate a hot cleaning solution into the rug and then immediately suck it up. The rug is left mildly damp, and presumably much cleaner, than with vacuuming alone. Where the "steam" comes from on the name of these home appliances is a mystery. There is no steam involved. I suppose it is an attempt to make us think that this type of cleaning will be the same as a steam cleaning service that comes to our house. It’s not. But it’s great for what it is.

– The Features –

� Long Cord and Hose

I need the freedom move unencumbered to snare that big patch of dirt over there without having to go unplug the machine and find a new outlet. This model comes with a 20′ power cord and an 8′ hose.

� Solution/Recovery Tanks

The Hoover has nicely designed tanks. The solution tank has a built in measuring cup. The cap is easy to get on and off without risking my nails. The recovery tank is very simple to remove and replace, it just fits right into a special well. A great thing is that if the recovery tank is not positioned properly, you are unable to operate the appliance, which I’m sure has prevented a lot of messy accidents in my house! I’ve had no problems with either tank leaking. Hoover even included a nice sized bottle of rug cleaner in the box so I could start cleaning right away!

� User Friendly Controls

The on/off switch is foot operated, which is convenient. The control for dispensing the cleaning solution is located right on the handle making it a breeze to maintain jurisdiction over how much and when the soap hits the rug. The carpet cleaning brushes rotate at 2 different speeds. The control for this is inconveniently located near the bottom on the front, but I don’t find myself changing the speed in midclean anyway.

� Carpet Brush

Watch out for steam cleaners that do not have a brush which rotates and cleans your rug. If you only depend on the "steam" action of these home cleaners, you’re only going to end up with a damp rug that is just about as dirty as when you started. This model has 5 mini brushes that all rotate independently.

� Upholstery/Stair Nozzle

Watch out for models that do not come with one. You will really regret not being able to do the stairs or that recliner with all the dirt marks on the arms.

– Steam Cleaner Cleaning Advice –

� Make sure you vacuum first!

These appliances are not made to pick up chunks. You’ll get a much better result if you do some precleaning.

� Consider spraying the rug with Scotchguard after you clean.

It really helps to keep the rugs cleaner longer.

� Keep everyone off the rug till it dries!

I know this is simple advice, but it’s hard to follow and it will make a big difference in your final result.

� Great to use in a light flooding situation.

You can use this appliance to suck up excess water similar to the way you might use a wet/dry vac. I have cleaned up after light flooding by just utilizing the recovery tank and ignoring the solution tank. When I’m done getting most of the water up, I then go ahead and clean the rug as long as it’s wet anyway.

– In Conclusion –

The bottom line is that I would recommend this cleaner. I think you’ll be very pleased with the results. It is sturdy and has served us well. I don’t use it as much as I thought I would though. I guess it’s easier to imagine yourself cleaning all the carpets than actually doing it!

Surprisingly, I have no disaster stories involving this appliance.
