I have had my Hoover Conquest 18″ upright since 1982. During that time almost nothing on it has worn or broken (I cannot remember replacing more than one belt and one rubber bellows in 22 years). If equipped with all the filters and mufflers (and even a bacteriostatic filter used to be available) it’s as quiet as any vacuum can be. This vacuum cleaner is very durable. It’s what you buy when you’re sick of replacing cheap vacuum cleaners. It lacks the fan by-pass, but an ingenius way of routing the incoming air over the top of a vertical fan means you may never chip a fan. It has ferocious suction. The brush roller is a one piece casting and is expensive to replace, but mine just now FINALLY needs replacing after 22 years - and it was worked hard and long. Highly recommended especially for wide areas, and the “L” shaped intake head allows you to snatch particles from under chairs without moving the chair. For home use, I might rather recommend the 14″ model. This is the vacuum cleaner you buy once, use for a lifetime and then leave to your kids. Remember that it is very heavy, and it sucks down so hard on the carpet that it can be hard to pull or push - NOT recommended for the elderly and frail. Smaller children will not be able to push this machine around - but it does a fine job. IN FACT, the frame and case are (large, and) so strong that I used to vacuum the floor with my child sitting on the shroud until they were over 4 years old. It’s (at least my old model was) built like a tank. Edge cleaning is good. I PREFER the manual height adjustment on the Conquest over the so-called “self adjusting” feature offered on some other models. Originally purchased for a janitorial company that I owned in 1982, it is the one vacuum cleaner from my “fleet” that I could never sell or give up. I still have and use it, today.
I bought mine USED for $250.00 in 1982.
IF Hoover ever made this model with the counter rotating dual brush rollers they offer on some other models, I would find the money and buy it(as long as they did not decrease the remarkable durability of the machine by adding the double brush roller).
HEY HOOVER - please do it, but do it right!
I like vacuum cleaners and often give away the one I bought last year and buy another to “try out”. I think I am finally done with “cheap” (less than $200) vacuum cleaners.
