I bought this unit because my bagged Hoover was starting to smell like burnt rubber. I replaced the belts, still rubber smell. I went down to the store and saw the Dyson but for half price, I thought it was worth a shot. On top of that, the store said I can bring it back if I don’t like it! Great and away I went.
I decided the best thing to do is compare it Infinity with my friends Dyson. We have two yellow labs so finding dirty, hairy spots is no problem! I emptied both units and cleaned 1/2 with the Dyson and the other 1/2 with the Infinity. I then cleaned both of them out and then vacuumed each opposing side. Both vacuums did not pick up any other additional dirt or hair so my conclusion, both clean equally as well.
Things I like about the Infinity - I like the height control. I have unusual carpet and if it is not hit very hard with the brushes, it doesn’t look like I’ve been there. The Infinity really hits the carpet when I want it whereas the Dyson is self leveling so as a result, it doesn’t hit it as hard. Within an hour the Dyson carpet looks as though I had never vacuumed the room. The Infinity still looks like it had been cleaned.
The Infinity is harder to push than the Dyson (regular purple model without the swivel ball). I think this is partially because I have the height adjustment set pretty low on the Infinity. The Dyson is a little lighter in weight as well but nothing dramatically noticeable. Basically, it’s a good alternative to the Dyson with a few problems.
Here are the problems I have found.
The cord retention clips are useless if you accidentally step on the cord one time while vacuuming. Both plastic clips broke off within the first few days. Definitely need to redesign how the cord goes up the handle from the motor more securely. To fix it, I used my ever-useful electricians tape and taped the cord up high.
The second problem is the lever for the brush. Quite a few times the pedal moves back towards the “brushes off” position but not enough sometimes for you to notice it. I just try to make it a habit to push down on the pedal to “carpet” every once in awhile during my vacuuming.
The final problem, the motor just stopped. I was vacuuming and then the motor just quit. I checked some other plugs….nothing. I called the store and they said just bring it back and get a new one. A few hours later just before I was going to return it, I tried it again…it worked! Mmmmmm. I decided to wait.
About a week later, my wife had the same problem. I suspect it is some heat protection circuit but then again, it was only on a few minutes. I took it back and decided (and am hoping) it was an isolated unit and picked up another one. Two weeks into it, the Infinity is still running strong.
UPDATE: I got a replacement unit and have used it for another few weeks. Unfortunately, the motor quit again while vacuuming for only 4 minutes! There must be some type of overheating defect here. I really wanted this one to work (mainly for the price) but I guess I’m going to have to try something else. I will call the factory before bring it back and post their response.
2nd UPDATE: I called the factory and asked if the vacuum should be shutting down/overheating after 4 minutes of use and their answer was “Yes, this is normal”. Please check to be sure nothing is plugged in the tubes and canister. I told here the unit was clean and did not have any excess blockage. The next step was to send the unit to them for repair. I asked if I wold need to pay the shipping and leave it with them for 2-3 weeks and she said yes. I said thanks for the confirmation and I will have to return the unit back to “Linens and Things” and get the Dyson.
I happened to be at “Best Buy” when I made the call to the factory and afterwards I briefed the sales person on the situation and asked for her opinion on the Infinity. She said that they have had poor performance with the unit and she did not like it very much. I told her about the problems and that I felt it wasn’t built very well. She said “I could have told you that”. Her recommendation was the Dyson over the Infinity.
