This is probably the best upright vacuum I’ve owned in the last 25 years. It’s easy to empty (albeit a little dusty if you’re careless) and it really does manage the placement of the dirt, fibers, etc. so that the unit maintains suction while the dust “bin” fills. There’s a secondary foam filter which blocks dust from reaching the motor; both the main dust bin and the secondary filter assembly (and foam) are washable (and dry quickly).

All the above would be worthless if the vacuum didn’t actually pick up the dirt. It does so with ease. We have rather new carpeting that has quite a bit of lofty fibers; with our old Panasonic vacuum, this would fill the paper bag in about 20 minutes with only a few ounces of “fluff”. At $1 per bag, this was ridiculous. The Bissell works like a charm and may be emptied in about 30 seconds.

I should mention that there’s yet a third filter that is claimed to be a “HEPA” type; this filters the air exiting the vacuum (after the first two stages have done their jobs). Haven’t had a need to change this yet. Bissell offers a washable foam filter if you prefer not to have to purchase these HEPA filters.

We have a one-story house so I can’t comment on using this on stairs.

This vacuum has a detachable hose with on-board tools. It does make the vac a bit bulkier and heavier but there’s the convenience factor. Frankly, it’s no worse (and probably better) than competing vacs from Eureka and Hoover).

We looked at vacs from all the manufacturers; none came even close to this Bissell in terms of convenience and cost. The design of this Bissell is the best I’ve seen of the “bagless” type. (I worked in this industry for over 15 years and can speak with some authority on this topic.)

We’ve had this vac for about 5 months. I’d buy it again.
